Multi-Sector Partnerships

Recognizing that no one sector of society has the resources or expertise to effectively address the challenges facing today’s young people, IYF serves as a catalyst to create strategic alliances among the corporate, government, and civil society sectors as a way to maximize the impact and reach of youth development programs. Many of these multi-sectoral partnerships are multi-million dollar initiatives carried out in multiple countries, funded over a period of three to five years. IYF also partners with multi-lateral institutions such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Multilateral Investment Fund of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

Examples of IYF's multi-sector partnerships include:

  • Support for Positive Youth Development in the Balkans -- In 2002, USAID provided US$3 million to support IYF's work in partnership with the Balkan Children and Youth Foundation to provide grants and technical assistance to youth-serving nongovernmental organizations in the Balkan region. Support is being directed at programs that focus on five priority issue areas: nonformal education, youth employment, technology, democratic and civic participation, and health awareness and prevention.

  • Employment Training for Young People in Latin America and the Caribbean -- In 2001, IYF launched entra 21, a $25 million initiative with the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) of the Inter-American Development Bank to prepare youth in Latin America and the Caribbean for jobs in the information technology field.

  • Interactive Education Materials for Classrooms in the Philippines - In May 2003, IYF, Nokia, Pearson and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched Bridgeit - a new, innovative program that uses mobile technology to bring interactive, multimedia learning materials to local classrooms around the world. The program is being piloted in the Philippines, where it was developed locally under the leadership of the Ayala Foundation in partnership with the private, government, and NGO sectors.
