Curriculum Development Specialist - Tanzania

Job Purpose
The International Youth Foundation (IYF) is a nonprofit organization that seeks to improve the conditions and prospects of children and youth around the world. IYF is currently seeking a Curriculum Development Specialist for the two-year Bridgeit Tanzania project. The project seeks to increase the educational quality and achievement among boys and girls in primary schools in math, science, and life skills through the innovative use of cell phone and digital technology.

Job Responsibilities
The Curriculum Development Specialist’s role will be to coordinate the Bridgeit Project’s lesson plan development around video content, as part of the curriculum supporting the Bridgeit program in Tanzanian schools. The Curriculum Development Specialist will work in close consultation with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) and the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) to provide guidance to the video development team, help in the development of lesson plans around the video content, review and edit curriculum and teacher guides, and assist schools with the implementation of materials.

Specific Tasks

The Curriculum Development Specialist will be responsible for the following specific tasks:
  • Coordinate all Bridgeit’s efforts in reviewing existing digital content from various sources in order to understand the needs and opportunities for adaptation to Tanzanian primary schools;
  • Coordinate curriculum review workshops with curriculum and lesson planning experts from MoEVT and TIE in order to understand the content needs and how video content should be adapted or developed in response to these needs;
  • Closely work with MoEVT, Tanzanian Institute for Education (TIE), FAWE, and Pearson Foundation to design, coordinate, and participate in Lesson Planning Workshops;
  • Coordinate Bridgeit’s efforts in writing, editing and producing lesson plans and teachers’ guides;
  • Participate in select monitoring visits, as well as formative and summative project evaluations, which will help inform curriculum review and revision needs;
  • Work with IYF Digital Content Specialist, in coordination with MoEVT and TIE, to ensure curriculum relevancy, age and gender appropriateness, and pedagogical standards;
  • Participate in periodic meetings and phone calls, as needed, in order to ensure effective project communication and planning;
  • When time allows participate and assist in teacher training workshops in order to offer support and feedback from teachers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Reporting and key relationships

  • Supervised by the Bridgeit Chief Advisor;
  • Work closely with IYF staff in Tanzania and Baltimore, local Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT), Tanzania Institute for Education (TIE), and FAWE-TZ.

Qualification Requirements:

Professional Qualifications
  • University Degree in education, Masters preferred.
  • 5-7 years of experience in the education field.
  • Experience designing lesson plans and curricula for primary school students.
  • Knowledge of Tanzanian educational system, particularly primary school math and science curricula; experience working with the MoEVT and TIE.
  • Experience in teaching primary schools in Tanzania.
  • Experience in working with international NGOs in education-related projects is desirable.

Personal Characteristics

  • Must be a self starter, who takes initiative and works with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to work well under pressure.
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili with excellent written and oral communication skills.
